This is Us – NBC- From the schmaltzy promos I was incredibly nonplussed and uninterested in this show. But I watched the pilot anyway and all I have to say was, don’t believe a show by it’s promo! The show is about three siblings and their parents. I don’t want to give away the twist but it’s a good one. The show dives deep into issues of race and size in a remarkably fresh way. So I’m hooked.
Bull – CBS -Michael Weatherly left NCIS to headline his own show, which is this one about a genius trial specialist. It’s got a number of tropes and shadows of its predecessors including Lie to Me and every law show EVER. But I like the cast and the premise enough to keep going. I’m just waiting for the back story about why Dr. Bull is so damaged and driven. ::yawn::
The Good Place – NBC – I was confused about the premise of this based on the promos until right before it started. I’m a fan of Kristen Bell though and I’m chomping at the bit for a new sitcom. The Good Place is about a young woman who finds herself in heaven and realizes that she really doesn’t belong there. The cast is diverse and talented. The premise is quirky and when some of the jokes fall flat I’m willing to overlook them for the ones that soar.
Pitch – Fox -I love the tagline of a ‘soon to be true story’ depicting the rise of the first female professional baseball player. There are two women (that I know of) in the pro minor leagues right now so give it another couple of years and hopefully we’ll break that barrier. The show isn’t as perfect as its premise. I’m giving it another couple of episodes to find its feet but I worry that it’s too heavy-handed and heavy-hearted to succeed.
