Welcome to Me – This is an indie film with Kristen Wiig as a woman with borderline personality disorder (which is a catch-all diagnosis) who wins the lottery and uses the money to star in a talk show about herself. The film is quiet but pretty fast paced considering the subject matter. Wiig is odd and some of her mannerisms seem familiar from her SNL days but overall I enjoyed her vulnerability here. I don’t think it’s her best but it’s a quirky little film with heart.
Disney’s Descendants – This is a cheesy Disney TV Movie. Let’s not pretend that it’s anything else. The kids of villains live on an island prison with their parents but are given a chance for redemption when the good prince brings them to the ‘real’ world. There are some great moments and there are some terrible moments. The entire thing is super predictable but sort of fun anyway.
Hot Pursuit – When I saw the trailer for this a while back I thought – omg! I love the Witherspoon–Vergara pairing. Those two women are hilarious, this is gonna be great! And in some ways, it is. But it’s one of those movies where the best bits were used in the trailer and the rest of the film is just filler. Witherspoon’s thick accent and naïveté get old fast. Vergara seems to play a heightened version of her Modern Family character. Both women are capable of so much more that this allowed them. Almost like they were just directly badly?
