From the trailers this movie looked like Men in Black for dead people instead of aliens. And that’s essentially what it is, but I don’t know when people decided they had to kill off Ryan Reynolds‘ charm, the dude is funny let him do his thing. There were glimmers of that old charm and smarm but it was hard to get through Jeff Bridges‘ terrible Old West gunslinger schtick.
I did like Mary Louise Parker, hated Kevin Bacon (but I usually do) and there wasn’t really anyone else to get to know. The action sequences were big budget and very reminiscent of Men in Black, but the mythology was poorly explained and really not necessary. I think they made it overly complicated. I would have been happy with some generic ass-kicking by Reynolds with some snark from Daniels and a simple good guy triumphs over bad guy story.
