Supernatural is my favorite show. It barely ekes above my other favorites, but it’s the only American currently running series on the list, and while many would call it a guilty pleasure Supernatural has all of the prerequisites of a great show that will live long past its final episode.
Sam (Jared Padelecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) are brothers whose lives have been tainted by the demonic death of their mother and the subsequent hunt for things that go bump in the night. Now eight seasons in (just renewed for a ninth woot!), the brothers
remain the mainstay of the show. Their relationship is the glue that has held the series through some shark jumping moments, some meta-episodes, multiple show runners and the departure of its creator. Not every episode is a gem. Not every season is as strong as the others. But the body of work as a whole is something to be admired. It also has the distinction of being the only show left from the old WB/UPN days and it predates Twilight, Vampire Diaries and most of the genre shows cluttering up our Tivos.
A lot of the credit goes to Jared and Jensen (J2) who have a real life bromance and work incredibly hard to keep the stories alive. As much as the fans may groan at certain story lines, they must receive those pages and shoot each other a look that fans are familiar with as being an eye roll mated with a smirk. They are faithful to their fans and their fans are devoted to them. The show can be fairly dark (literally everyone dies at least once) and touches on some fairly hefty topics including religion and God, but at the end of the day the show is about two brothers who continue to sacrifice everything for each other and their cause of saving the world from monsters.
